In July 2019, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) contracted K&J to provide Safety Management System (SMS) training to the whole of BART’s Executive Management staff. This SMS training covers BART’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) per 49 CFR Part 673 regulatory requirements and addresses required corrective actions presented to BART by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
In July 2019, MBTA contracted through a third-party firm, which subcontracted with K&J, to perform a detailed organizational safety culture assessment. This was initiated by MBTA leadership after several derailments and near miss events that have taken place at the property over the last few years and more so, with two derailments in a 4-day period in June 2019. This assessment involves conducting interviews at all levels of the organization, evaluating how well the SMS program and ASP requirements are integrated within the organization from the executive leadership, down to all operational aspects of all modes of transportation within MBTA. In July 2019, K&J was awarded an Emergency Exercise Support Contract with Hitachi Rail STS with taskings to support the Hitachi Honolulu Rail Project. This work includes planning, executing, and evaluating table top and full-scale exercises, ICS/NIMS training and other operational support requirements as needed.
K&J staff, through FTA/TSI guidance and a final review/approval process, updated three TSI catalog courses in 2019. These courses included FT0051, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) (January 2019); FT00551, Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Considerations for FTA Capital Improvement Projects (FTACP) (January 2019); and FT00538, Transit System Safety and Security Design Review (TSSS-DR) (March 2019). All three classes have been taught this year with final edits completed and ready for publication for the upcoming training year.
